Bassin Bleu, Gourbeyre

Bassin Bleu, Gourbeyre

Bassin Bleu is one of southern Basse-Terre’s favourite river swims: in Gourbeyre, at about 620 m in the rainforest, a small waterfall pours into a turquoise pool. It is only 15 minutes’ drive from Basse-Terre.

Access and swimming

From Gourbeyre, take the D10 towards Palmiste; after about 4 km, park by the road at the “Bassin Bleu” signs. About 20 minutes’ easy but muddy walk. The water is cool and clear; one fall forms a natural slide. Experienced hikers can continue to the Parabole waterfall.

Nearby, the heart-shaped hot pool of the Bassin des Amoureux (Bain des Amours) is the perfect way to warm up.

Safety

Rivers on Basse-Terre can rise very fast: do not go after heavy rain or if a storm is forecast, and leave the riverbed immediately if the water turns murky or leaves and branches start coming down. Swimming may also be temporarily banned (floods, water quality): follow the signs on site.
