The Paradis waterfall, Vieux-Habitants

The Paradis waterfall, Vieux-Habitants

Hidden at the end of the Grande Rivière valley in Vieux-Habitants, the “Paradise” waterfall drops into an emerald pool below basalt columns, after about 1.5 hours’ walk — under an hour’s drive from Basse-Terre.

The hike

Park near the La Grivelière coffee estate at the end of the valley road. About 5 km and 3 hours return with little climbing, but several river crossings. Cold water; keep away from the cliff (rockfalls).

Rivers on Basse-Terre can rise very fast: do not go after heavy rain or if a storm is forecast, and leave the riverbed immediately if the water turns murky or leaves and branches start coming down. Swimming may also be temporarily banned (floods, water quality): follow the signs on site.
