The Galion Falls

The Galion Falls

Below La Soufrière volcano, the Galion river forms a 40-metre fall in high-altitude forest. The hike starts at the Bains Jaunes car park in Saint-Claude, 20 minutes from Basse-Terre.

The loop

About 6 km, 460 m of climbing and nearly 4 hours with the Armistice trail; a knotted rope for the last 100 m to the falls. Hard: mud, river crossings, roped sections; not for children under 10.

Rivers on Basse-Terre can rise very fast: do not go after heavy rain or if a storm is forecast, and leave the riverbed immediately if the water turns murky or leaves and branches start coming down. Swimming may also be temporarily banned (floods, water quality): follow the signs on site.
